Bank Exam Speed Maths
Page 10: Time, Speed & Distance (Shortcut Methods)
1. Basic Formula
Speed = Distance / Time
Distance = Speed × Time
Time = Distance / Speed
Example: Speed = 60 km/hr, Time = 2 hrs
Distance = 60 × 2 = 120 km
2. Unit Conversion
km/hr → m/s: × 5/18
m/s → km/hr: × 18/5
Example: 72 km/hr = 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s
3. Average Speed
Formula: Total Distance / Total Time
Special Case (Equal Distance):
Average Speed = (2xy) / (x + y)
Example: 60 km/hr and 40 km/hr
Avg = (2×60×40)/(60+40) = 48 km/hr
4. Relative Speed
Same Direction: Speed difference
Opposite Direction: Speed sum
Example:
A = 60 km/hr, B = 40 km/hr
Opposite direction = 100 km/hr
5. Train Problems
Distance = Length of train
Example:
Train length = 120 m
Speed = 60 km/hr = 60×5/18 = 50/3 m/s
Time = Distance / Speed = 120 ÷ (50/3) = 7.2 sec
6. Boats & Streams
Downstream Speed: Boat + Stream
Upstream Speed: Boat - Stream
Example:
Boat = 10 km/hr, Stream = 2 km/hr
Downstream = 12 km/hr
Upstream = 8 km/hr
7. Important Tips
• Always convert units correctly
• Use relative speed in train problems
• Apply shortcut formula for average speed
8. Practice Questions
1. Speed = 50 km/hr, Time = 4 hrs → Distance?
2. Convert 90 km/hr into m/s
3. Avg speed of 30 & 60 km/hr → ?
4. A (40 km/hr) and B (60 km/hr) opposite direction → Relative speed?
5. Boat = 12 km/hr, Stream = 3 km/hr → Upstream speed?
