Bank Exam Speed Maths
Page 6: Ratio & Proportion (Shortcut Methods)
1. Ratio Basics
Ratio: Comparison of two quantities
Form: a : b
Example: 10 : 20 = 1 : 2
Tip: Always simplify ratios to lowest form.
2. Proportion Concept
Proportion: Equality of two ratios
Form: a : b = c : d
Property: a × d = b × c
Example: 2 : 3 = 4 : 6 ✔
3. Direct Proportion
If one quantity increases, the other also increases.
Example:
More workers → More work done
More workers → More work done
4. Inverse Proportion
If one increases, the other decreases.
Example:
More workers → Less time required
More workers → Less time required
5. Ratio Distribution Trick
Formula: Value = Total × (Part / Sum of Ratio)
Example: Divide 300 in ratio 2:3
Sum = 2+3 = 5
First part = 300 × (2/5) = 120
Second part = 300 × (3/5) = 180
Sum = 2+3 = 5
First part = 300 × (2/5) = 120
Second part = 300 × (3/5) = 180
6. Important Shortcut
If a : b = x : y, then:
a = kx and b = ky (where k is constant)
Example: Ratio = 2 : 3 → Values = 2k, 3k
7. Practice Questions
1. Simplify 15 : 25
2. Divide 400 in ratio 1 : 3
3. If a : b = 2 : 5 and a = 20, find b
4. Check if 4 : 6 = 8 : 12
5. Identify direct or inverse proportion: Workers & Time
