Bank Exam Speed Maths
Page 19: Approximation (Fast Calculation Techniques)
1. Basic Concept
Approximation means simplifying numbers to make calculations faster.
Used when options are far apart.
2. Rounding Rules
• 1–4 → Round down
• 5–9 → Round up
Example:
23 ≈ 20
78 ≈ 80
23 ≈ 20
78 ≈ 80
3. Approximation in Addition/Subtraction
Example:
498 + 302 ≈ 500 + 300 = 800
498 + 302 ≈ 500 + 300 = 800
Example:
803 - 197 ≈ 800 - 200 = 600
803 - 197 ≈ 800 - 200 = 600
4. Approximation in Multiplication
Example:
49 × 19 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1000
49 × 19 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1000
5. Approximation in Division
Example:
198 ÷ 9 ≈ 200 ÷ 10 = 20
198 ÷ 9 ≈ 200 ÷ 10 = 20
6. Square Root Approximation
Find nearest perfect square
Example:
√48 ≈ √49 = 7
√48 ≈ √49 = 7
7. Important Tips
• Use only when options are far apart
• Avoid over-rounding
• Maintain balance (both sides rounding)
8. Practice Questions
1. 497 + 303 ≈ ?
2. 802 - 198 ≈ ?
3. 51 × 19 ≈ ?
4. 210 ÷ 11 ≈ ?
5. √63 ≈ ?
