Reasoning Ability – Series

Series is an important topic in reasoning. Questions are based on identifying patterns in numbers or letters. It is a quick scoring topic if patterns are recognized correctly.


Types of Series

  • Number Series
  • Alphabet Series
  • Alphanumeric Series
  • Mixed Series

Number Series

Look for patterns such as:

  • Addition or subtraction
  • Multiplication or division
  • Square or cube patterns
  • Combination of operations

Example: 2, 4, 8, 16, ? → Answer: 32 (×2 pattern)


Alphabet Series

Use alphabet positions:

A=1, B=2, C=3 ... Z=26

Example: A, C, E, G, ? → Answer: I (+2 pattern)


Shortcut Tricks

1. Check Differences

Find gap between numbers or letters.

2. Look for Squares/Cubes

Series may follow n² or n³ patterns.

3. Alternate Pattern

Check odd and even positions separately.
