Time and Work Maths

Time and Work Concepts for Bank Exams

Time & Work Mastery (Professional Level)

Time & Work is a logic-based topic where efficiency and speed play a key role. LCM method makes solving much faster.

1. Basic Formula

Work = Time × Efficiency

Efficiency = Work / Time

2. LCM Method (Most Important)

Example: A completes work in 10 days, B in 20 days

LCM of 10 and 20 = 20
A's efficiency = 20/10 = 2
B's efficiency = 20/20 = 1
Total efficiency = 3
Time = 20/3 days

This method avoids fractions and speeds up solving

3. Efficiency Concept

More efficiency → Less time Less efficiency → More time

Example: If A is twice efficient as B → A takes half time

4. Work Distribution

Work is divided based on efficiency ratio

Example: A : B = 2 : 1 → A does 2/3 work, B does 1/3

5. Pipes & Cisterns Concept

Inlet → Positive work Outlet → Negative work

Example: Pipe fills in 10 hrs → +1/10
Pipe empties in 20 hrs → -1/20
Net = 1/20

6. Shortcut Tricks

  • Use LCM method always
  • Convert time into efficiency
  • Avoid direct fraction solving
  • Track negative work carefully

7. Formula Logic

If A takes x days → 1 day work = 1/x If B takes y days → 1 day work = 1/y Together work = (1/x + 1/y)

Speed Strategy

  • Use LCM approach
  • Convert everything into efficiency
  • Avoid complex fractions
  • Practice pipe problems

Practice Questions

1. A does work in 12 days, B in 6 days. Time together?
2. A is twice efficient than B. If B takes 10 days, A takes?
3. Pipe fills in 8 hrs, empties in 16 hrs. Net time?
4. Divide work in ratio 3:2
