Calculation Speed Mastery (Professional Level)
Fast calculation is the backbone of bank exams. Speed determines selection. This section covers professional-level tricks used by toppers.
1. Multiplication Trick (Near Base Method)
Example: 98 × 97
Step 1: Base = 100
98 → -2, 97 → -3
Step 2: Subtract → 98 - 3 = 95
Step 3: Multiply (-2 × -3 = 6)
Answer: 9506
Formula Logic: (a - x)(a - y) = a(a - x - y) + xy
2. Square Trick
Example: 105²
Step 1: 105 = 100 + 5
Step 2: (100 × 110) + 25
Answer: 11025
Formula: (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
3. Percentage Quick Trick
10% = divide by 10
5% = half of 10%
1% = divide by 100
Example: 25% of 480
= 480 / 4 = 120
4. Division Shortcut
If number ends with 0 → cancel zeros
Example: 2400 ÷ 40 = 60
5. Approximation Trick
Use rounding:
498 ≈ 500
Example: 498 × 21 ≈ 500 × 21 = 10500
Speed Strategy
- Practice mental math daily
- Avoid pen-paper for simple calculations
- Use approximation when options are far
- Memorize squares (1–30)
Practice Questions
1. 99 × 97 = ?
2. 104² = ?
3. 25% of 360 = ?
4. 480 ÷ 20 = ?
