Daily Current Affairs – Global Institutions & Power Dynamics

Role of the United Nations (UN)

The United Nations (UN) remains the most important international organization responsible for maintaining global peace and security. It was established in 1945 after the Second World War.

The UN works through several key organs:

  • UN Security Council
  • General Assembly
  • International Court of Justice
  • Economic and Social Council

The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members: United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and France. These countries hold veto power, which allows them to block major decisions.

NATO and Western Security Alliance

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military alliance formed in 1949 primarily to provide collective security among Western countries.

The principle of NATO is: "An attack on one member is considered an attack on all members."

The Russia–Ukraine conflict has significantly increased NATO’s strategic importance in Europe and strengthened military cooperation among its members.

Russia and China – Strategic Cooperation

Russia and China are increasingly cooperating in global politics to counterbalance Western influence.

Russia remains a major military power with significant energy resources, while China has emerged as the world's second-largest economy.

Both countries are actively participating in platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Gulf Countries and Energy Politics

The Gulf region plays a crucial role in global energy markets. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Iran are major oil and gas producers.

Political instability or conflicts in this region can significantly impact global oil prices and international trade.

Pakistan–Afghanistan Security Concerns

The Pakistan–Afghanistan border region continues to face security challenges. Militant groups and cross-border tensions have created instability in the region.

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, concerns about terrorism and regional security have increased.

These developments affect the broader security dynamics of South Asia and global counterterrorism strategies.
